Early in the morning, for anyone who pays attention, a carrier pigeon flew into the militia HQ, and one of the pigeon masters ran a message to the lower offices. There was commotion and shouting, and a militia captain called out for a regiment to assemble and prepare for departure.
The pigeon master returned to his post to find another carrier pigeon waiting for him. Relaying this pigeon's message resulted in far more shouting and some argument between several of the militia officers. This argument came to a halt when three more pigeons landed, cooing from the cages on the militia barracks roof. By the time the pigeon master had collected ad relayed the three messages, two more pigeons had arrived.
The militia HQ fell into chaos. The assembled regiment circle around their officers looking confused and some even scared. The most senior captain ordered all men to the walls, messengers to outlying farms to order all farmers and families within city walls. Any more decisions would fall to Lord Gaverek when he returned from his morning hunt.
Men on the wall stood in silence. At the HQ, more pigeons arrived at regular intervals. A blackboard outside the Lord's Office was erased, and now only had a running tally. Starting at 8, the count grew to 19 by noon.
Lord Gaverek rode into town at half past midday, and was greeted at the gate by Captain Blackwater.
"Lord Gaverek! I regret to inform you that we've received word by carrier pigeon, the militia outposts are under attack." Blackwater declared, his voiced wavering slightly.
Lord Gaverek dismounted his horse, his smile immediately fading to a look of determined concern. "Which outposts Captain?"
"All of them, Lord." replied Blackwater. "... all of them."
