Tier 4 spells represent some of the most powerful effects in the game, and as such are not granted as easily as lower tier spells. Players have more control over the acquisition of these spells, but each one requires a combination of time and effort, with a trade-off of one for the other. Putting in no effort at all, a player will have to wait almost 3 seasons to learn a tier 4 spell, but with dedication, perseverance, and a little bit of luck, it is possible to learn a tier 4 spell in as little as four events.
Learning each tier 4 spell is a 16 step process. This process begins when either a mage has learned 4 tier 3 spells in both Arcanum and their first specialty school, or when a priest has learned 4 tier three spells of any combination between their two granted axes. At the event after this condition is met, the character will receive the first fragment of their first tier 4 spell. If the caster is a mage, he will also start to learn spells from a second specialty school, and if he is a priest, she may start working towards learning another tier 1-3 spell within the two axes granted by her god. Once the character collects 16 fragments of a tier 4 spell, they will be able to learn that spell.
If a character chooses to forgo learning any other spell, they may instead focus their studies or prayers and acquire two fragments per event. Additionally, players will find that opponents of appropriate difficulty will be in possession both tier 4 arcane diagrams and religious relics. Tier 4 arcane diagrams can be used to substitute for a tier 4 arcane spell fragment, and religious relics can be used as a substitute for a tier 4 divine spell fragment. A maximum of 8 arcane diagrams or religious relics can be used in the learning of any tier 4 spell.
*Sorcerers may gain fragments for both arcane and divine spells when they meet the appropriate conditions, may gain two fragments per event (one arcane and one divine) and may only used arcane diagrams toward their arcane spells, and religious relics toward their divine spells.
*Hybrid casters (Paladins, Bards, Monks, and Arkines) will receive fragments at the same speed as True casters.
