Mages are required to have a spellbook with all the spells the mage knows written within. If a mage does not have her spellbook, she may not cast spells until she recovers it. So long as the mage is alive, her spellbook is essentially indestructible. Should a mage die, her spellbook will vanish from where she was slain and re-appear in her possession when she resurrects.
The spells in a mage’s spellbook are held in place by the mage’s own force of will. The spellbook is essentially an extension of the mages mind, and should the mage perish, what remains of them in their spellbook will fade over time as well.
When a mage permanently dies, their spellbook immediately loses one spell in every tier in every spell school. For every day that a mage is permanently dead, their spellbook loses one additional spell per tier per spell school. After 4 days, the spellbook will be empty.

I like that. You can use more mage mooks, and it explains why there aren't a berjillion spellbooks roaming around. Ya know, one for every mage in history up to this point.
